Nicole Kidman scorches in her role as a super-scary, South-side Hester Prynne. Unnerving as a cobra, she slithers through every channel to find her heart’s desire. Unfortunately, the desires are carnal and she is swarmed with opposition. Throughout the film, her sense of public decorum slips away all too easy; much has been made of two mind-boggling scenes that defy every convention of good taste (which we’ll let you discover on your own). Naturally, we are suspicious of dogmatic— why not just say it : ANGLICIZED notions of propriety. Our favorite actress relishes pushing our buttons. The Paperboy is a defiant work painted in the hi-def, saturated-splendor of Full Color. Through Daniels ’ garish gaze, Kidman’s performance steams from the auteur’s cacophony of carefully contrived saccharine doubt.
